Responsible for providing specialist development and support functions for bespoke software utilised in Radiation dosimetry records, radioactive isotope record keeping & Nucleonic instrument services.
Technical achievements included the design and development of a new database system for seamless integration of a new radiation badge type in to the radiation dosimetry record management system and design and development of a new database system to enable planning and monitoring of scientist visits to various establishments holding radioactive sources. Research work involved feasibility studies for migration of current oracle forms based systems to web based systems utilizing Oracle Apex and integration of documents into current database systems (via C/BLOBS).

Managed a team of 4 responsible for maintaining IT systems concerned with ensuring quality and supply of geospatial data. Provided technical input into decision making processes including requirement gathering, attending project meetings and end-user liaison.
Technical duties included development and maintenance of applications primarily using Oracle Forms, embedded Oracle package/procedures (SQL), UNIX scripts and MapBasic. Achievements included development of an error management and reporting system within an Oracle Forms based application resulting in a considerable reduction in the number of user support calls due to increased robustness of the system, and the replacement of a ‘flat file’ based geospatial data system, with an Oracle database driven system which resulted in greater processing efficiency and improved reporting facilities.
Team leading duties required planning and co-ordination of team effort and reporting to higher level management on a regular basis. This required the allocation and monitoring of tasks, planning projects and end-user liaison. I was also responsible for staff development and performance management within the framework of the organisations staff performance and review procedures. Achievements included successful end of year staff reviews using a new performance management system introduced to the organisation and the management of staff performance/disciplinary issues.

Involved in development, maintenance and documentation (to ISO 9001 standard) of operational information systems for the emergency services, developed using Micro Focus Cobol, Oracle and Ingress across a wide range of hardware platforms all operating under a UNIX environment.
Other duties included, temporary support desk manager and responsible for client liaison and management of junior members of staff and DBA tasks.
Main achievements included implementation of an incident review system for police services enabling users to perform detailed searches using a wide range of selection criteria and to view comprehensive details and played a major role in the conversion of database systems to millennium compliance, requiring conversion of data and code, as well as full system testing.
Involved in the development of a number of utilities for the transferral of data between UNIX based systems and Microsoft Access databases using Visual Basic 6, and the development of a web based Incident viewing system including WAP technology.

Responsible for maintenance of legacy student records system running on HP hardware, and development of related applications. Also responsible for development and post implementation support of new student records system running in a UNIX environment. Also responsible for planning, developing and implementing a fund-raising database system for the University alumni office.
Major achievements included development of a student registration and library card distribution system, whereby student registration details were entered and various course details would be provided by the system – in particular, timetables could be calculated and any clashes reported, and unique registration / library cards could be issued.
I was also responsible for the 1996 exam grade / HESA reporting system whereby student’s exam results were calculated and a number of statistical reports produced. The system also produced exam result notification letters.
The post was for an initial period of 1 year, and was extended by a further 9 months.
