TRLabs Regina, University of Regina, Regina, Canada January 2007 – August 2008

Graduate Student

Worked towards the completion of my MASc’s project on Agent Simulation in Healthcare

In this work, I investigated the paradigm of modeling healthcare system behavior through an Agent Simulation. I explored macroscopic and microscopic perspectives of Canadian Healthcare in order to examine healthcare systems mechanisms and policy, as well as behavior of individual system components. Examples of Canadian Healthcare components presented in this work are as follows:

1-Hospital Bed Allocation System

This system models the process of Bed Allocation and Discharge through a population of Software Agents within an Agent-based Software System. Actual data records of bed usage, taken from the Neurosurgery department at Regina General Hospital, were used with the simulation at the frequency of usage in actual physical system. Agents interacted with each other, evolving over time, and the overall behavior of the system was monitored though different hypothetical conditions which simulate the real world. The system allows administration to increase average bed occupancy percentage while reducing patient waiting time. The summary of the tasks I performed are as follows:

 Interviewed employees and management of Neurosurgery department at Regina General Hospital

 Conducted workflow analysis of Neurosurgery department

 Analyzed, manipulated and cleaned up actual data records

 Designed As-Is processes, implemented and visualized processes through Mobile Software Agents

 Modified dynamics that affects patient flow and monitored various system behaviors

Technologies: Agent-based Modeling, Mobile Software Agents, Java, NetBeans IDE 5.5, TEEMA, Flash CS3 Professional, Photoshop CS3, MS-Office 2003

2-Diabetic Patient Agent Simulation

The Diabetic Patient Agent is a representation of a Diabetic patient through the structure of a Mobile Software Agent. Inputs to this agent model are critical items such as Food, Exercise and Insulin intakes, as well as a number of Risk factors for Diabetes such as Age, Gender and Ethnicity, while the outputs are major medical test results for Diabetes such as Blood Glucose. The simulation is validated and verified and it represents the time evolution of Patient Agent outputs which deteriorate over long term period.
