Additional Information
My diploma in Accountancy had a very practical approach to it, one that provided an insight into the real business world. The modules that I studied, including financial reporting, cost accounting, Payroll, Taxation, Auditing, management accounting for planning control and decision making, gave me a real insight into a firms operation at a grassroots level. One of my biggest achievements in my academic life to date is the completion of a very big project that I undertook as part of my course. It involved the introduction of a new beer into the market. The project incorporated every aspect of knowledge gained from the diploma and required the extensive use of excel. Such application of knowledge manifested itself in Sales projection, Costing, Financial reporting and budgetary controls. This project gave me the confidence to tackle any large scale projects I may face in the future but most of all, its practical nature gave me an understanding of how a business works at its most basic level which provides me with a good understanding of the commercial world.
Throughout my time at Heriot watt I have had two big group work projects for project management and Business venturing. In the case of the former, I was project manager and therefore gained a taste of the leadership role, as well as developing the necessary analytical skills to manage and work with a team. In the case of the latter, I learned the importance of team work and above all, communication with colleagues. This along with the thrill of negotiating with clients and my new found adaptability as well as versatility makes the Business and Finance industry appealing to me. Furthermore, the Finance modules that I studied such as financial markets theory and corporate finance are modules that I excelled and took a real interest in. It is from these modules that my ability to think strategically was born. With this in mind, my aim is to enter the Business and finance sector. My strengths in numeracy, communication, strategic thinking and adaptability provide me with the skills necessary for the Business and Finance world.
My honours year Dissertation was based on De-Skilling in the healthcare industry. This involved the assessment of the recent phenomenon of de-skilling in other industries and then applying new found concepts through secondary research to the healthcare industry. Primary Data collection involved the interviewing of seven candidates who worked in the healthcare profession in order to ascertain their daily lives and routines and whether they felt their skillset was being fully engaged. The skills I gained from this is what I really benefit from which is critical thinking, sound analysis and research as well as resilience, skills that translate well into the Business world.
In short, my ability to think strategically and critically as well as my adaptability to any situation would make me an asset to the Business and Finance industry. As well as such transferable skills, my solid work ethic, ability to handle large workloads and ability to work with other people should stand me in good stead.
Employment History
June 2014 – August 2014
Duck Woods Country Club, North Carolina
During my time at Duck Woods I served as a busser. This included serving tables and clearing them during various shifts as well as maintaining customer satisfaction. This role was particularly high pressured as this was a country club, which is held to a high standard. I attained skills such as rigour, consistency and adaptability as North Carolina is very different from my native United Kingdom. That adaptability and versatility is what I will take from this going forward.
August 2013 – November 2013
Papa Johns, Glasgow
My role at papa Johns was a delivery driver. I was responsible to make sure food reached customers on time and to a satisfactory standard. This required the ability to work under pressure as I was working in a past paced environment, something that would translate well in the legal world. A high service of customer standard was adhered to as well as the ability to think quickly as I had to calculate amount of change owed on the spot.
July 2007 – June 2009
Royal India Restaurant, Linlithgow
My main duties here consisted of operating the till, taking orders and housekeeping. I was dealing with the public personally and providing good customer service on a daily basis. Responsibilities consisted of helping the customers with their orders by informing them of the ingredients of a dish and the restaurants best dishes and dealing with large volumes of money. I was also involved in a sales/marketing scheme where I successfully promoted our business to random members of the public. I was consistently the top performer in bringing more revenue to the business. This experience helped me build on my communication skills and taught me how to work quickly under pressure whilst maintaining a high standard of customer service, attributes which are transferable to the Business and Finance arena. It was here that I developed a real insight of the bare bones of business and its daily operations which I will carry with me wherever I go.
