Barwa City 2 International Schools, Doha, Qatar – 50,000 sq.m.
Position – Project Manager;

Project info: As part of Barwa City Amenities Project, AECOM was awarded to design two schools that would be reference schools in the region. Although the project initiated as a design for four kindergartens, it evolved in to a more complex design as a result of BARWA’s visionary ideas to build two competition level schools, one for boys and one for girls. As a result of extensive design and introducing sustainable design criteria from newly introduced Qatar Sustainability Assessment System, we have produced a design for a school that can accommodate comfortably 1500 pupils. The building itself is divided in two elementary and mid-high wings, incorporates all of today’s hi-tech wizardry that raises education level to its peak and introduces creative learning that extends from a typical classroom to a broader learning environment. Learning corridors flooded by natural lighting from a sky lighted space frame roof structure and flexible spaces characterize this highly sustainable school building. Although the buildings footprint is immense and with its 13 500m2 represented a challenge for sustainability, we have tackled successfully by reducing heat island effect with vegetated roof areas and atrium green oasis.Exterior areas have been carefully studied in order to produce a balanced design that would accommodate play areas as well as open learning spaces for students from both elementary and mid-high school and serve the Barwa City community afterhours. Total built up area of each school is 24,000m2. The project has been further developed by the appointed contractor as a design and build project and is operational.

When necessary, helped architectural design teams in preparing submittals on time and within budget. Prepared: reports, studies, analysis, meeting minutes, close out report and followed up invoices with the Client. Performed team reviews, analyzed learning from the project – what went right, what went wrong, and how to improve performance on the next project? Listened, observed and made required changes to the team after discussing with the team members individually their responsibilities and performances.
