I was graduated with a 2:1 degree in Earth System Science from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, with a study focus on geology and petrology. Apart from geological studies, due to my interests in environmental protection and species conservation, I have also taken courses in environmental science, biology and climate sciences. The knowledge I acquired has given me an insight into the importance of sustainable development in all aspects of life.
Unlike a stereotypical science student, I love talking to people and listening to their stories. Therefore, in my past working experiences, I have strengthened my interpersonal and communications skills through working with people from different backgrounds and with different personalities. For example, being a student ambassador at the Museum of Climate Change has given me opportunities to communicate with people from various sectors, including technology, science, education, policymaking and engineering, allowing me to practice using different approaches to understand my target audiences and deliver my messages to them. My experiences as a teaching assistant for both my programme and a secondary school has also helped me develop my interpersonal and problem-solving skills through everyday teaching and event organisation. I believe that with my knowledge, my technical skills and my soft skills combined, I can be a good candidate for a position that faces customers while a certain level of professional knowledge is needed.
MSc Environment, Politics and Society at UCL
BSc in Earth System Science (Geology) at Chinese University of Hong Kong
1. Teaching Assistant at Lok Sin Tong Yu Kan Hing Secondary School
I was employed as a teaching assistant of natural science subjects, geography and mathematics for students aged 12-18. Apart from daily teaching duties, I was also responsible for organising STEM activities for students, parents and teachers, in which I gained experience in project planning and management, communication and report writing.
2. Teaching Assistant at Chinese University of Hong Kong
I worked as a teaching assistant for my programme during the final year of my undergraduate study. My primary duty was to organise a geological field trip to Mainland China in cooperation with teaching staff at Peking University. I was responsible for teaching activities planning with my colleagues, logistics arrangement, budget management and communications with partnering schools.
3. Student Ambassador at the Museum of Climate Change (MoCC)
As a student ambassador, my major duty was to deliver messages on climate change and environmental protection to visitors as I guided them through the museum. I have assisted in organising event that promote environmentally friendly practices, such as work shops, exhibitions and public forums, in which I got to practice my skills in project planning, project management and public engagement.
I would spend my free time practising new skills. For instance, after my graduation from university, I have been self-learning Python as a new programming language to add to my skill set. Because of my previous learning experience with programming, I found Python interesting and challenging to learn. As Python is commonly used in different industries, I believe this skill can be handy when communicating with people in the energy and science sectors.
Besides, I enjoy hanging out with my friends during my free time. We play board games that require us to cooperate as a team and compete as opponents. I enjoy the processes of planning strategies and utilising the strengths of teammates to achieve our goals. I can also train my skills in cooperating with people with different skill sets and personalities.
