Key Skills
• Inspirational leader; I have transformed the aspirations and ambitions of young people in Bristol through the expeditions I have run. I have helped Ashton Park school achieve excellent results through my position as a school governor, and as an experienced classroom teacher who understands the needs of students and how to get the best out of them.
• Excellent team worker; with the ability to work productively with a wide range of people in school, LEA, colleges and universities and in local and international communities.
• Good communicator; engaging with people on many levels and topics, ranging from primary school pupils in the classroom to members of the 2012 Olympic Organising committee, and from community leaders in Africa to reluctant 15 year old students.
• Innovator; I have devised programs for Bristol students to go to East Africa and work with pupils and teachers as well as provide educational infrastructure by building schools (almost 200 students have travelled to East Africa with me in the last 10 years, all funded by the hard work of the students). I have worked with head teachers in Bristol and Africa to develop school strategies that allow their students to take more ownership of their education in Kenya and currently in Tanzania. This has included working with Kenyan Government Ministers and Tanzanian Educational Authorities.
• Cooperative; through my position as the South West Bristol Education Trust Cooperative Governor I work with a range of primary schools to develop whole school strategies. The aim is to give pupils a seamless education in South West Bristol from 5 to 19 and allow them to realise their own potential.
• Adaptable; I have taken the skills learnt during my time as Senior Research Engineer and applied them to my current role in education. The many roles and responsibilities I have reflect how I am able to manage change effectively with an eye for guiding policy and striving for success.
