I completed my 4 year apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering with Walter Energy at Aberpergwm Colliery. During this apprenticeship I attended Gower College Swansea gaining academic qualifications BTEC level 3 diploma in electrical/electronic engineering (QCF). Vocational qualifications gained include MPQC Level 3 Diploma in Mining Electrical Operations and NVQ Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations and Engineering Practices. I have also completed the first year of HNC in electrical engineering.

Underground Electrician                                  

As an electrician in a mine it is vital to be professional and alert at all time. Due to the hazardous environment you are working in all work carried out must be done safely and to a high standard taking into account specific details that if ignored could cause explosions and serious accidents.

On a day to day basis I was:

Responsible for providing electrical support in terms of maintenance and fault finding on plant and machinery including installation of equipment and services.

  • Planned Maintenance and service inspections from (A-type visual), to (C-type Internal) checks on switch gear, motors and machinery of various voltages ranging from 12v to 6600v.
  • Repairing breakdowns of the switchgear and machinery including problem solving, testing the panels and control units to identify and correct the faults.
  • Understanding and following electrical schematic drawings to enable identification of faults, component parts (for replacement) and for purposes of modification and changes as necessary to the equipment control system.
  • Installation of equipment and services such as communications (intercoms), conveyor belts, lighting circuits, Fans, Motors, switchgear and machines.
  • For the conveyor belts an understanding of all safety and monitoring devices such as emergency stops, lockout keys, belt alignment, spillage probes, motor temperature and blocked chute probes was a key criteria.
  • Typical machinery control circuits (which had to be complete for the machine to start) would include oil level, oil temperature, water pressure, operator switch and emergency stops. Any problems encountered were identified using schematic drawings and test equipment such as Digital Multimeters, Insulation Resistance Testers, and intrinsically safe voltage indicators.
  • Working with PLC’s including programming them on a laptop through ladder diagrams then transferring them on to media storage device to take underground to operate the machinery, the systems I worked with include: MINE MATIC, SCADA and ALLEN BRADLEY.
  • While working at the mine I learnt how to work quickly and safely as it was vital to do so to limit down time and production loss.

Apprentice Electrician

Training and instruction in the following disciplines:

  • Fault-finding and trouble-shooting techniques (input/output method; half split method)
  • Planned maintenance, servicing and inspection (using dedicated equipment checklists)
  • Installation, commissioning and testing of plant and equipment (insulation resistance testing, polarity testing, earth continuity tests.
